Infinity Ward is finally taking a step away from World War II with their latest title, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. There are far too many WWII games out there and it’s refreshing to see that COD4 is taking a step in a new direction while still having the same great gameplay that everyone loves.
The single player part of Call of Duty 4 does a much better job of telling the story behind the game then previous titles did. Several levels in the game are played just to explain the story. For instance, in the beginning you play as a person that is about to be killed and you just watch as you are dragged from place to place. In another instance you wake up in a crashed helicopter, only to crawl out and observe what is going on. During these story telling parts, you usually have control over where to look and sometimes can move around, which makes it feel like you are actually playing the game instead of just another cut scene. This is something that I haven’t really seen used before, and it works extremely well to tell the story behind the game while still making you feel a part of it. The game still does have cut scenes though at the end of each level. These also do a great job of explaining the situation at hand and what your mission is.
Besides how the story is told, the actual gameplay and specifically the weapons system is just as amazing. The weapon system is just like it was in the previous games, but with modern weapons. Most of the time you will have to iron sight, or look through the scope, of your weapon to aim and shoot. The aiming in COD4 is pretty interesting. The left trigger is used to look through the scope or iron sight on your weapon. The game will autoaim, or snap, your gun to the closest enemy. At first this sounds like it would make the game way too easy. However, since targets are almost always moving or ducking for cover, you still have to line up and take your shots yourself most of the time. The entire weapon system is very easy to get the hang of and it feels very fluid and lifelike.
The actual weapons that you use are similar to what you see in other games such as Rainbow Six and Counter Strike. There are assault rifles, SMGs, light machine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, RPGs, and more. One of the main weapons that you use, the M4A1, is also equipped with a silencer, grenade launcher, and laser that you can see with night vision. This kind of weapon is obviously more modern than the weapons used in previous COD games based on WWII. You are also usually equipped with claymore mines, C4, and sometimes airstrikes to take down hordes of enemies or tanks.
Speaking of tanks, my biggest complaint with Call of Duty 4 is that there are absolutely no vehicles that you can drive in the game….at all. I mean…how do you forget about drivable vehicles? I’m not sure why COD4 has no drivable vehicles in single or multiplayer, but it makes me sad. The vehicles really gave a variety to the gameplay in previous Call of Duty games. Instead of just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more, occasionally you got to ride around in a tank and blow some things up. Sadly, you won’t get the chance to do this in COD4. You will get the change to ride around on vehicles every once in a while, but you never get to operate one.
It’s sad that COD4 has no drivable vehicles, but the game does do a very good job of mixing up the kind of missions that you are playing to keep the game interesting. Many of them are just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more, but there are a number of sniper, stealth, rescue, and other type missions thrown into the mix to keep the game interesting.
Once you beat, or if you get bored with the singleplayer, you can always hop online to play. Call of Duty 4’s singleplayer is the best in the series, but the multiplayer is even better. As you play games online you will gain experience and move through the different ranks and unlock different modes and weapons. When you first start playing online you have to choose between preset classes, but after a few matches you will unlock the ability to create your own class. This allows you to choose your favorite weapons, grenades, and a few extras.
The game comes with 16 different multiplayer maps and 6 different gameplay types. With that much to play around with, it makes it very hard to get bored of the multiplayer. I’m sure new maps and possibly new gameplay times will be available for download soon. Overall, the multiplayer is one of the best I have played in a long time and it is very easy to get hooked to because of the rank system. (There is a bar at the bottom that constantly shows you how much longer until you level up.)
Besides the gameplay and gametypes, both the graphics and audio were very well done. The graphics look extremely realistic, especially the weapon and player models. I think the grass that you see throughout the game could have looked better, it seems too jagged and doesn’t move or bend, but this is just a minor flaw. All of the weapons sound different and realistic, explosions and helicopter crashes all sound great.
Infinity Ward really did an amazing job with Call of Duty 4, especially considering that they took the game in a different direction. The weapon system is amazing, the singleplayer very fun and the story is told well, and the online multiplayer is among the best out there. If you’re looking for a new shooter to play this Christmas, definitely pick up Call of Duty 4, you won’t be disappointed!
