With the Wii's impending release, it is great to see the hype for video games and consoles soaring. Many haven't been this excited about video games since late 2001, when both the Xbox and the Gamecube came out and everyone wondered which company would win in the end, and who would produce the most stellar games. Five years later, the only clear winner is us, the gamers, who have received some of the best the industry has to offer from each of the big three – all in the name of competition and sales – and in that spirit does gaming thrive. We have seen the birth of new gaming franchises such as Halo, as well as the blossoming of old series which were thought to be exhausted, like Metroid and, of course, Resident Evil...
Can we expect the results to be the same for gamers? We certainly hope so. And with new titles, such as Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (or "Resident Wiivil" as many now refer to it), which will come out for the PS3 and Xbox360, the future looks bright and beautifully textured for the gaming community. Think that’s impressive? Well, a totally separate game is being developed (with a tentatively same name) that will take advantage of the Wii's controller.
Nintendo’s version is split into two modes: Scenario and Arcade. The arcade mode will be based on the Mercenaries mini game found in Resident Evil 4. But it’s the scenario mode where most of the fun is to be had and the new game really stands out.
A very cool idea has been implemented in the scenario mode; one that fans and casual gamers will find extremely rewarding…Wiivil will span the entire RE series and is to be split up into four playable chapters. The Mansion, from the first Resident Evil; RE 2's RPD; Raccoon City from the third game; and RE 4's village. For each of the chapters, there will be two playable characters, Jill and Chris, Leon and Claire, Jill and Carlos, and Leon and Ada, respectively. In addition to these characters, there will also be several unlockable characters including Rebecca Chambers, Barry Burton, Albert Wesker and HUNK. Each of these characters has their own strength and weaknesses, variations in health, speed, etc…as well as their own set of weapons.
The game will play much like Resident Evil 4, so don’t think the Wiimote will be used light-gun style. Instead, the B-trigger will be used to go into over-the-shoulder mode, the Wiimote motion sensing will be used for aiming, and the A button to shoot. Quick Time Events from RE4 are back too, however they will be done through movements using the Wiimote rather than button pushing. Unlike RE4 however, focus will be returned to ammo conservation, so save those bullets and your infamous Ribbons. The unfortunate side to this gameplay type is that you will only be able to carry two weapons at a time, so choose carefully.
Each chapter will feature never-before-seen weapons, as well as some from the Resident Evils of old. This includes Richard's shotgun, not to mention (everybody's favorite), the Desert Eagle and Krauser's robots. After you complete a chapter, the weapons featured in them will be available for use in the aforementioned arcade mode. Details on the weapons are a closely guarded secret, but should be pretty awesome knowing Capcom’s ingenious developing skills.
Expect a graphical upgrade from RE4 on the Gamecube…but don’t expect to see detail that the 360 or PS3 will hold. So it’s not RE5, but definitely much better than the previous game. Unfortunately, as said previously, Capcom has kept a tight lid on the upcoming game and has not released video or screenshots either...yeah, we’re sad too. Never fear, though, once they surface, VGCore.com will sport them proudly.
As exciting as Resident Wiivil sounds, it simply doesn't have the same hype surrounding it as the 5th RE game will have, or already has, for that matter. We like to think of this as Capcom's gift to Nintendo for hosting their last great game. It may hold some truth to say that if the Wii was as powerful as the other consoles, this game may not even exist…as harsh as that sounds, it’s less expensive and a lesser risk to port than it is to develop ground up. Still, as it is a Wii game, we have to expect a unique gaming experience that only the Wii can offer. Expect a release sometime next year and more coverage from VGCore.com as more details become available.
