The demo shown at E3 has Samus landing on what appeared to be a space cruiser orbiting a planet at very low altitude. Of course, the cruiser was under attack by what else: Space Pirates. Moving through the ship was all typical Metroid gameplay, only with the addition of the new Wii functionality mentioned above. The enemies encountered ranged from groups of laser spewing drones -- which required precise aiming on the Wii remote -- to the more challenging but equally more entertaining Space Pirates. Halfway through the demo, Samus found herself on a platform located on the under belly of the cruiser. This platform was open to the environment around her, but was also easy access for the Space Pirate dropships to fly in and drop off some of their troops. Fighting the space pirates, like all else, was a combination of old Metroid gameplay with the new Wii options. In addition to manual aiming, gamers could also rip the shields off of some of the Space Pirates leaving them more vulnerable. Gamers had to lock onto the Space Pirate, throw the Nunchaku forward, and then pull back on the thumbstick to successfully remove the shield. This technique could also be used to remove some rubble or doors in Samus's path. Once the ground based Space Pirates were handled, a new flying variant attacked. After dealing with them, Samus finally found herself in a tough spot: dealing with two of the dropships that doubled back and were about to finish her with their mounted weapons...
Indeed, the mystery of Metroid Corruption starts here. Just before our favorite female bounty hunter was laid to waste, a mysterious alien with ice abilities attacked both cruisers, finishing them both off in a matter of seconds. This alien could not only fire ice blasts from his hands, but also surf (yeah surf) on a sheet of ice he controlled. Just think Ice Man from the X-Men crossed with the Protoss from Starcraft and you'll get the general idea of what this guy looked and acted like.
One would think nothing in the demo could top the a huge fight scene such as this, but Metroid Corruption was planning on delivering the best of fanboy surprises. Once the fight on the platform was finished, Samus found herself in a control room. After completing a simple Morph Ball puzzle (yes they are coming back too), the generators were back online. Then from above, the huge Space Pirate leader Ridley, attacked Samus and plunged both into a freefall towards the core of the planet. What followed was one of the most intense battles ever witnessed in a Metroid game. In Metroid Prime, it was bad enough to have to fight Ridley, but how about fighting Ridley while free falling -- dodging bursts of rubble while a timer runs down! -- all the way from 16,000 feet? Ridley had his typical assortment of attacks: He could swipe at the gamer, breathe fire, and shoot lasers. All of which had to be dodged in order to survive. The only way to hurt Ridley was to find the glowing red weak spots and blast the heck out of them.
The demo concluded with Samus laying a few final blasts before the ice alien returned and saved her -- just in the knick of time. Overall, the Metroid Corruption demo was commendable. Pointing and shooting with the Wii remote is still clunky at times, and the lack of new gameplay features (beyond the Wii functionality), has me wondering how much new stuff is actually going to be in Metroid Corruption. I still have faith in the title and Nintendo. So, here is hoping for some extra bounty hunter goodness when Metroid Corruption launches for the Nintendo Wii.
