The biggest announcement at Nintendo's E3 press conference was their introduction of Wii Fit. The theme for Nintendo, as always, was reaching out to a broader market, trying to bring in more of the casual crowd while at the same time, keeping those current casual Wii owners happy. That is where Wii Fit comes into play.
Utilizing a new Wii peripheral which resembles a weight scale, Nintendo is hoping to take advantage of the popularity of the "exercise benefits" of Wii Sports by creating a totally exercise centered experience. Exercises range from simple aerobic stepping sequences, to the relaxing Yoga, and the straining push up. While the units on stage weren't calibrated perfectly one can see the potential.
This new peripheral called the Wii Balance Board, senses the weight distribution of the person standing on the pad and can determine everything from your center of weight, to your BMI, and if you are stretching in the right direction.
Truthfully though for the hardcore fans this really isn't all that impressive. We like our Marios, Metroids, and Zeldas. However, the promise of using this peripheral in other future games besides Wii Fit does keep the inner fan in me happy. For now.
